Better lighting at a lower cost

Better lighting at a lower cost is the result of a successful project involving DB Schenker in Jönköping, Sweden. The project includes new light fixtures, light sources and control systems and has enabled Schenker to halve its energy costs, while adding 30 per cent more lighting. This, in turn, contributes to a better and safer working environment.

Birger Andersson, building engineer in Jönköping, talks about the situation at the Jönköping terminal before the project:

“Previously, we had older fluorescent light fixtures with tubes that produced poor light. It cost money, not only because it was always lit, but because the shadow effect created by the poor light led to damage to goods and the property.”

Now that the project is complete, the Jönköping terminal has 500 new dual fluorescent light fixtures. The lighting is regulated by a control system, as not all areas need to be fully lit around the clock.

Optimised conditions with Aura Long Life

The project included not only operation but also maintenance, which affected the choice of fluorescent lamp. In order to optimise the conditions, Aura Light’s fluorescent lamps of the type Aura Thermo Long Life were chosen. The long service life of Aura Light’s Long Life fluorescent lamps means that they are expected to last for about 13 years. The luminous flux has also been optimised; the lux number has been almost doubled. With Aura Thermo Long Life, the luminous flux is strong even at low temperatures, as may be the case out in the terminals.

“There’s really good light in the terminal now. The staff are happy, which is easy to understand, because for them the difference is clear. Nowadays, the light reaches the floor and it is easier to read the consignment notes and cargo information,” says Birger.

The project in Jönköping is part of a larger project. Schenker in Jönköping was in fact commissioned by the group to produce a strategy regarding the selection of light fixtures and light sources. The strategy will then be exported to 30 or so other terminals throughout Sweden. Karlstad, Kristianstad and Växjö are already ready. Next in line are Malmö and Västerås.
